Henry Ford Health Plans Two Projects In Detroit

Henry Ford Health (Detroit) announced plans for two new projects in Detroit: the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and the Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute.

Expected to open in 2029, the 125,000-square-foot Shirley Ryan AbilityLab will have 72 beds for inpatient rehabilitation for those recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other conditions.

The new facility, which will be managed by the Chicago-based Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, will occupy three floors of a new patient tower planned at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The project is expected to cost $179 million, with $60 million coming from Henry Ford Health and $119 million funded by the Gilbert Family Foundation (GFF; Detroit).

Additionally, the Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences partnership is planning to open the Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute. The facility will focus on research to advance care for neurofibromatosis and increasing access to personalized care.

Slated to open in 2027, the research institute will be housed in the Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences research facility. GFF is funding the project, which is expected to cost $50 million.
