Mayo Clinic Announces $5B Renovation Of Flagship Campus In Rochester, Minnesota

Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.) announced a $5 billion, six-year plan to overhaul its flagship campus in downtown Rochester, Minn.

The project, part of the nonprofit organization’s “Bold. Forward. Unbound.” initiative, aims to bring Mayo Clinic teams and patients together to transform the patient experience, advance more cures, and improve outcomes.

Slated for completion by 2030, the project will add five new buildings and related infrastructure and utilities spanning 2.4 million square feet with “future-oriented design elements” and digital technologies, including robotics, automation, and predictive analytics, according to a press release.

Among the design elements will be a new central point of arrival, unified care neighborhoods, universal grid design on the clinical floors for flexibility to adapt to future care needs, and expanded parking facilities.

The project team comprises Foster+Partners (architecture and design), CannonDesign (architecture and design), and Gilbane Building Company (general contractor).

“This is a revolutionary moment for medical care and a complete rethinking of the traditional hospital building as we know it—offering maximum flexibility for future needs, while ensuring that the interest of the patient remains at the heart of their healthcare,” Norman Foster, founder and executive chairman, Foster + Partners, said in a release. “Our design centers on natural light, views and connections with nature—to facilitate new breakthroughs and help deliver the highest level of care, with warmth and compassion.”
