According to researches, 76% of men die by suicide and it is one of the leading causes of death for men under the age of 35, while 42.5% of men worldwide are suffering from prevalent mental health issues. Men are far less likely than women to seek psychological help, indicating that they suffer in silence.
The silent epidemic of mental health issues affecting males around the world is becoming a difficult pill to swallow. Mental health issues can impact anybody, but stigma and discrimination can make people fearful of sharing their stories and seeking assistance. Many men suffer in silence when they encounter feelings of depression, loneliness or anxiety since men’s mental health remains a taboo subject in society.
Men are expected to be “tough” and “fearless“ according to conventional gender stereotypes, and many men believe they are not a “man” if they exhibit any evidence of vulnerability. Men may be reluctant or unwilling to seek treatment because they are unable to recognise or act on warning indicators. In popular culture and the media, outdated depictions of masculinity are all too ubiquitous. Men are more prone to use maladaptive coping mechanisms when they are unable to address a problem or communicate to receive help regarding a life issue. Excessive drinking or drug use, gambling, risky behaviours, or isolating oneself are examples of maladaptive coping.
