Critical Care Tower Planned For Forsyth Medical Center

Novant Health (Winston-Salem, N.C.) is planning a new critical care tower at its Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The five-story, 193,480-square-foot tower is the second phase of Novant Health’s capital investment project at the medical center. The tower will be designed to complement the existing hospital’s exterior with brick, glass, and metal panels.

Inside, the main lobby will feature floor-to-ceiling windows to bring natural lighting into the waiting area, while the furniture and finishes will take cues from local gardens and parks.  The first floor will house an expanded pre- and post-operative space and enhanced operating rooms and support spaces.

The second, third, and fourth floors will house a combined 36 medical/surgical beds and 60 critical care beds. The standardized patient rooms will be larger than existing rooms on the campus  and designed to convert to intensive care or isolation rooms for higher-complexity care. A centralized nurse station on each patient floor will create operational efficiencies, while smaller decentralized work niches outside patient rooms will enhance patient care and support increased bedside nursing time.

The project team includes Gresham Smith (architecture, engineering and design; Charlotte, N.C) and McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture (architecture, planning, and interior design; Charlotte).

The tower is slated to open in late 2024.
