sympathy vs empathy – what’s the difference?

Compassion and empathy are related concepts, but they have distinct meanings and refer to different aspects of our emotional and cognitive responses to others’ experiences.

Empathy:

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It involves putting oneself in someone else’s shoes and experiencing the world from their perspective.
Nature: Empathy is primarily a cognitive and emotional understanding. It allows you to recognize and feel the emotions of others without necessarily taking any action in response.

Compassion:

Compassion goes beyond understanding and sharing the feelings of others; it also involves a desire to alleviate the suffering or distress of others. It is a response to empathy that includes a motivation to help or support.
Nature: Compassion is more action-oriented. It is the emotional response that typically leads to acts of kindness, support, or assistance aimed at reducing the suffering of others.

In summary, empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, while compassion adds a layer of motivation to take action and help alleviate the suffering or distress experienced by others. Empathy is more about understanding, while compassion involves both understanding and a proactive response.
