The HCD 10: Perkins Eastman, Outstanding Organization

Perkins Eastman is a global design firm spanning 17 practice areas, including healthcare, primary and secondary education, senior living, hospitality, urban design, arts and culture, and more, and employing 1,100 people across 22 studios. Its healthcare practice, specifically, drove numerous achievements for the firm in the past year, delivering more than 3 million square feet of completed projects across the U.S. and 500,000 square feet internationally, all while setting the pace for healthcare design to come.

For example, The David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center in New York opened in early 2020 after more than a decade of work. The 750,000-square-foot center establishes a new model for cancer treatment at MSK by using the whole building—from the interior programming to the exterior expression to the variety of experiences within—as an active participant in patient care, helping to reduce tensions and anxieties and enhance outcomes.

Beyond the care setting, though, the project pushes the boundaries on sustainability and resilient design. During peak energy use in the summer, the LEED Gold project can generate 30-35 percent of its own electricity through rooftop microturbines. A water runoff system allows the building to use rainwater in its cooling technology and treats stormwater for drinking, bathing, and sterilizing in emergency scenarios.

Meanwhile, its location along the East River inspired safeguarding against a 500-year flood event with floodgates at every vulnerable entrance, above-flood elevation mechanical equipment, and a 25,000-gallon basement-level fuel tank protected by a submarine-style entrance and exit.

Beyond the Koch Center project, Perkins Eastman also delivered the 265,000-square-foot MarinHealth Medical Center: Oak Pavilion in Greenbrae, Calif., a standout project that raises the bar for access to nature in healthcare by providing constant indoor-outdoor connections through generous solariums, terraces, and gardens.

The NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital: Center for Community Health designed by the firm is the first major ambulatory care facility built in Brooklyn in 40 years and, at 400,000 square feet, the largest.

Perkins Eastman also contributed to supporting the nation’s COVID-19 response in numerous ways, including in the design of the 220,000-square-foot SUNY Stony Brook Alternate Care Facility and projects for several NYU Langone campuses.

However, it’s what came next that further establishes the firm’s mark on the future of design: the completion of three COVID-19 Centers of Excellence for NYC Health+Hospitals/Gotham Health and the NYC Department of Design and Construction.

Totaling more than 100,000 square feet, these first-of-their-kind facilities are designed to support patients suffering from long-term effects of the virus and located in New York neighborhoods hit hardest by the pandemic and historically underserved. As comprehensive health centers, these facilities aim to reduce impacts from COVID-19 but also to address issues of inequity, healthcare advocacy and education, and access to appropriate primary and long-term care.

With a focus on innovation and pushing design forward, and more than 20 healthcare design awards under its belt for achievements in the past year alone, Perkins Eastman has emerged as a leader to help the industry navigate where it goes next
