The Deep Burnout Problem Behind ‘The Great Resignation’ Predates the Pandemic
The first time I knew I wanted to quit my job as a television news producer was in 2015. I returned to work from my twelve week maternity leave and didn’t want to be there. During my leave I bonded with my baby and finished my first novel. My spirit was vehement against my return, but what could I do? I had no plan. I continued working, writing, and raising my son. In 2017, months before my debut novel came shek

Cities Change, So Must Their Hospitals
The Hill-Burton Act of 1946 funded many of our urban hospitals across the U.S., from the post-war period through the 1970s. American cities of that era presented a very different social, economic, and cultural landscape than they do now. Health campuses, in keeping with the urban planning ethos of the time, tended to be closed off and inward-looking, with little connection to the cities around them. But things are changing. The 2020 Census shows that our cities and suburbs are healthcare

There Is Much More to Mindfulness Than the Popular Media Hype
By Pierce Salguero, Penn State Mindfulness is seemingly everywhere these days. A Google search I conducted in January 2022 for the term “mindfulness” resulted in almost 3 billion hits. The practice is now routinely offered in workplaces, schools, psychologists’ offices and hospitals all across the country. Most of the public enthusiasm for mindfulness stems from the reputation it has for reducing stress. But scholars and researchers who work on mindfulness, and the Buddhist tradition itself, paint a more complex picture Healthy

Choosing to be child-free
Becoming a parent is a big choice, and there shouldn’t be shame whatever we decide. So why do women who choose to be child-free so often face questioning, accusations, and stigma? When my sister and I were children, we had different tastes in toys. She begged for baby dolls and prams, while I longed for stuffed animals. She wanted to play ‘mummies and daddies’, while I pranced around pretending to be a cat. Guess which one of us now has happi
